White Blood Cell Count (WBC)

Table of contents

White blood cell count (WBC) measures the total number of infection-fighting cells circulating in your blood. It works as a broad signal of immune activity, so it is usually read alongside the rest of your complete blood count rather than on its own.

What the WBC count measures

The WBC count totals all five types of white blood cells (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils) in a set volume of blood. These cells are the core of your immune defense, responding to infection, injury, and inflammation. Because it is a combined total, the number tells you how active your immune system is without showing which cell type is driving it.

What high or low levels mean

A high WBC count, called leukocytosis, often points to infection, inflammation, physical or emotional stress, or the effects of some medications such as corticosteroids. Strenuous exercise, smoking, and pregnancy can nudge it up as well. A low count, called leukopenia, can follow viral infections, autoimmune conditions, certain drugs, or chemotherapy that suppresses bone marrow. You should follow up with your clinician if your result sits well outside the reference range, keeps drifting over repeat tests, or comes with fever, fatigue, or frequent infections. Read the total together with the differential, which breaks the count into individual cell types and usually explains what is behind the shift.

WBC FAQ

What is a dangerously high white blood cell count?

Counts above roughly 30,000 cells/µL usually warrant prompt evaluation, and very high numbers can signal serious infection or a blood disorder. Any result far above your lab's range should be reviewed by a clinician alongside your symptoms and history.

Can stress raise your white blood cell count?

Yes. Physical stress like intense exercise, injury, or surgery, and to a lesser degree emotional stress, can temporarily raise your WBC count. These rises are usually mild and settle once the trigger passes, so a repeat test often reads normal.

Should you worry about a slightly low WBC count?

Not always. Mildly low counts are common, can follow a recent viral illness, and sometimes reflect normal variation. Your clinician looks at the trend over time and any symptoms before deciding whether the result needs action.

Read alongside your absolute neutrophil count, absolute lymphocyte count, and the full complete blood count to see the whole immune picture.
